How do I commission a painting?
Photo
The starting point for a commission is to choose a clear in-focus photograph. It does not matter if there are objects or people in the background, as this can be excluded from the final portrait. The photo needs to show as much detail as possible and have even lighting. It is important to choose an image with reflects the character of your pet, with an expression or position they often display.
Media
Catherine will review the photos and discuss the most appropriate media which can include: watercolour, pen and ink, graphite pencil and oil paint. The colouring of the animal and texture can lend itself to certain media.
Costs
The price of commissioning an animal portrait is determined by the size of the final piece and the choice of media. The prices published are an indication, Catherine is happy to complete work to meet your bespoke requirements.
Sketches
Catherine will start by completing sketches from the photo, which helps discover the textures and proportions needed for the final composition.
Painting
Once Catherine is happy with the preparatory sketches the painting/drawing of the final portrait will commence. Catherine prefers to work aiming for a 4 week completion, but flexibility is always possible to meet an important birthday or specific date.
Final Painting
Once the painting is complete, if it is a watercolour or graphite picture it will be set within a mount, ready for framing when convenient. The grand unveiling and presentation of the portrait is an exciting time. Portraits capture a moment in time, of a loving companion and often an extended member of the family!
